St KildaTake the tram to St Kilda for a fun day at this beachside suburb. The beach or busy Acland Street will entertain you by day, while the night action centres on Fitzroy Street. Just 6km southeast of the city, this popular residential and resort suburb gets the cool sea breezes off Port Phillip Bay. Many of the old 19th-century mansions remain and in some parts of the suburb, it is possible to imagine St Kilda when it was a fashionable seaside holiday destination. Today busy Fitzroy and Acland streets have a flourishing mix of retail and dining establishments, lively bars and art galleries. Many old buildings have been restored and on Sundays an open-air arts and crafts market along the Upper Esplanade is popular. Walkways along the St Kilda foreshore have been landscaped and this is a pleasant place for a stroll, but keep an eye out for the roller-bladers. You might like to hire a bicycle from the pier hire shop for a trip southward to Point Ormond or further to Brighton. The beaches along the way are good for swimming, but there is sometimes an undertow, so be careful. Acland Street Jewish Museum of Australia Luna Park Penguin Cruise St Kilda Markets |
