Welcome to Melbourne in Winter

Melbourne is set to be a visual feast this season with The Light in Winter display casting a magical glow over the city. Now in its third year, the cityÕs annual winter festival will see celebrated British light and visual experts UVA working their magic at Federation Square.

For art and culture undercover, check out the Melbourne International Film Festival in July and August, which will be screening films from around 50 countries over 17 days. Australia's largest showcase of both local and overseas talent, thereÕs sure to be a cinematic moment that catches your attention.

At the National Gallery of Victoria, another assault on the senses is Salvador Dal’: Liquid Desire exhibition. The first comprehensive retrospective of Dal’Õs work ever to be staged in Australia, paintings, watercolours, jewellery and sculpture will be drawn from the two largest collections in the world in Florida, USA, and Figueres, Spain.

Also based at Federation Square is the first John Brack retrospective in more than 20 years, incorporating paintings and works on paper, now regarded as some of the most iconic images of 20th century Australian art.

Other light-hearted diversions include Circus Oz, which is back in town with a new show called Circus Oz Barely Contained, thereÕs day and night time ice-skating at Wonderland Park and David Copperfield will be working his magic at the Rod Laver Arena in August.

Whether your passion is art, nature, culture or sport, youÕll find it all in and around Melbourne this autumn.

Melbourne - Australia's Cultural Capital City

Cosmopolitan and vibrant, Melbourne has the air of a solid Victorian-era city. Founded on gold wealth, and for a while Australia's capital, the city has a legacy of many fine old buildings, splendid public gardens and wide, tree-lined boulevards. The CBD has many tall office towers and a busy CBD shopping precinct which is arguably Australia's most comprehensive retail centre.

Australia's second largest city, with 3.5 million inhabitants, the predominantly Anglo-Saxon population has been invigourated by post-World War Two European migrants and more recent arrivals from Asia, particularly Vietnam. Trendy inner-city suburbs are shopping, entertainment and dining magnets for locals and visitors alike. Take a tram ride, sightseeing tour or Yarra River boat trip to fully appreciate the city's diversity and beauty. And the City to Williamstown Cruise will show you a beautiful view of the Melbourne skyline.

Just an hour's drive to the west of the city are the picturesque Dandenongs, a favoured weekend destination for city dwellers. The Mornington Peninsula, to the south of the CBD is a great summer destination for its long, sandy beaches.
